Etiquette & Dress Code
1. All students will maintain respect for their instructors, other students, and the practice of their exercise at all times.
2. We suggest arriving to class between 10-20 minutes early. This allows time for mental and physical preparation prior to class.
3. Never leave class without saying “Thank you” to your instructor and accompanist. Please support your neighbors at the barre, as they will support you.
4. Students are expected to be ready for class at the published start time. If you are going to be late to class, please let The Studio know through e-mail or a phone call. Entering class late is a distraction, impedes your progress, and invites injury as essential preliminary exercises are missed.
5. Students studying in the Intermediate & Advanced Ballet Division who miss class on a regular basis, as determined by the instructor (exceptions will be made for illness) may be asked to re-evaluate their commitment to study in this division.
6. No talking in class. Visit with friends before and after class, NOT during. You will be asked to observe or leave class if you talk between exercises or distract another student.
7. Proper hairstyles are necessary for the student to perform without distraction and for the instructor to observe correct body alignment. Long hair must be pulled back tightly and securely in a bun for ballet (for instructions on how to put your hair up click this link), or as otherwise directed by instructor for pilates or yoga. Short hair must be pulled off the face, and secured with headband or clips. Use long sturdy hairpins so that the bun remains secure throughout the class (small bobby pins are NOT allowed.) Arrive for class with your hair done, or with plenty of time to do it before the start of class.
8. Boys may wear a headband or bandanna to manage long hair or bangs.
9. Eat light and healthy foods before class, or bring a healthy snack with you (fruit, peanut butter, yogurt, sandwich, non-caffeinated drinks.) Both protein & carbohydrates are required to adequately fuel the growing dancer. No gum, candy, or sugar-sweetened drinks are allowed in The Studio.
10. Ballet students may not wear jewelry of any kind (including wristbands). It is dangerous and distracting. Small post earrings are acceptable. Pilates and yoga students should comply with their instructor's policy.
11. Please silence all cell phones before entering the classroom.
12. Ballet students: please use the bathroom before class.
13. Every ballet student should own and use a ballet bag which should contain all dancewear--clean and ready to go for the next class--slippers, pointe shoes, a small sewing kit, hair accessories, Band-Aids, water, towel, etc. Having an extra pair of tights as a ”back-up” is a good idea. Remember…every class is a performance and learning to be responsible is part of every lesson!
14. Ballet students under age 18 are required to wear the uniform leotard and tights assigned for their division. Adult ballet student’s suggested uniform is a simple, solid color, ballet-cut leotard, pink tights, and a skirt if desired. Other uniform recommendations are available from your instructor. Uniforms are available through The Studio in cooperation with our retail partner, Loretta’s Dance Boutique.
15. Pilates and Yoga students will wear conservative attire appropriate to the exercise.
